Business Ethics Track Creighton University
Ethical behavior is the best long-term business strategy for a company—a view that has become increasingly accepted during the last few year. The Faculty Advisory Council is designed to advance a dynamic conversation on current business ethics issues across all Bentley University departments and beyond the Bentley campus. In the case of a company that sells cereals with all-natural ingredients, the marketing department must temper enthusiasm for the product versus the laws the govern labeling practices.
This is because remedies for unethical behavior in business can take various forms, from exhortations directed at private individuals to change their behavior to new laws, policies, and regulations. Our employees are required to report any violations, or potential violations, of our Code of Ethics through our Doing What’s Right program, which includes a whistle-blower hotline and web portal that are managed by a third party.
They also receive course notes with cases and texts which will be used during the course, such as J. VERSTRAETEN, Beyond Business Ethics: Leadership, Spirituality and the Quest for Meaning, in Logos 5 (2002) 2, pp. 13-35. The problem here is not the opportunity for enrichment; the problem is that the responsibility to put someone else’s interests first, to do what’s right for them is in jeopardy. One Global Network means leveraging the power of global insight, relationships, collaboration and learning to deliver exceptional service to clients wherever they do business. Ethics may require not a total ban on marketing to them but special care in how they are marketed to (Brenkert 2008).
She may decide that the right course of action is to not do business in the country at all, and if she is invested in the country, to divest from it. The issue of divestment received substantial attention in the 1980s and 1990s as MNCs were deciding whether or not to divest from South Africa under its Apartheid regime. Most business ethicists would accept that, in most cases, the prices at which products should be sold is a matter for private individuals to decide.
Decisions and actions of the individuals who compose the business decide or to act, and not all decisions or actions are made in interests of the business. It is expected that a person will act in pursuit of their own values, and in instances where there is no consequence to any other party, ethics does not apply. I cannot presently conceive of a business in which people are not involved, and while a business might consist of only one person, that tends to be unusual. We affirm the legitimacy and centrality of moral values in economic decision making because without them, business relationships and strong communities are impossible.
